The US Army’s M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) are receiving a Collins Aerospace-provided upgrade that will deliver a significant uplift to their onboard power and, in turn, their survivability and reliability.

Under a USD 24 million contract, Collins Aerospace is producing and delivering electric generators with containers as part of the US Army’s System Enhanced Package version 3 (SEPv3) to improve the M1A2’s performance and extend its service life.

The new generators, which are being delivered to the US Army’s Anniston Depot, deliver 50% more onboard power than the vehicle’s legacy system, according to the company’s press release. The new generators also fit in the same space as the legacy system without requiring major changes to the vehicle or its existing electric systems architecture.

To date, Collins Aerospace has delivered 800 electric generators in support of the SEPv3 program, supplying critical power, diagnostics, and predictive maintenance support on the ground, according to the company’s press release.

With its increased power, the electric generator helps improve the M1A2’s survivability by enabling the addition of advanced systems, such as laser warning receivers and radio jamming capabilities.

The company’s generator uses advanced magnetics and active load management to deliver 100% rated power throughout the M1A2’s operating range. In addition, the state-of-the-art system boasts enhanced digital capabilities through its advanced generator control and communications features.

It is also noted that active protection systems such as the Trophy APS require significant amounts of power to operate and upgraded power packs on various battle tank types are imperative to support them. Read the article below about Trophy and Abrams.
