Through an impressive video, the National Guard and the Hellenic Army General Staff honor St. Barbara, the patron saint of the Artillery Corps.
In Greece, since 1829, after the founding of the Artillery by Dimitrios Ypsilantis, Saint Barbara was designated as the patron saint of the Artillery, and for this reason it is celebrated on December 4 of each year.
Since 1914, the emblem of the Artillery has been shield-shaped, with the characteristic colors of black and yellow, depicting two old-technology cannons, symbolizing the Artillery, and in the middle an anti-aircraft missile, symbolizing the Anti-Aircraft Artillery. The Artillery motto is “Power through knowledge”, which means “power relies on knowledge” in Greek. The Artillery of the National Guard has held the same blazon as the Hellenic Artillery since 1968.
The role of the Artillery is vital for the Defence and Security of each state. During military operations, the Artillery mission consists of providing immediate and continuous fire support to the maneuvering forces, in order to destroy or neutralize targets that could affect the execution of the mission of the friendly forces.
