The Research and Innovation Department of the Israeli Ministry of Defence unveiled today the “Iron Sting”, an innovative mortar ammunition.

The “Iron Sting” is a 120mm mortar munition that uses laser and GPS guidance in order to hit targets precisely and with minimum collateral damage.

The system can be fitted to Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) or 4×4 SUVs for both open terrains and urban environments.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the system’s precision will reduce the possibility of collateral damage and prevent injury to non-combatants, equipping “battalions with organic, accurate and effective firepower.”

The trials were performed in collaboration with Elbit Systems using two mortar systems. One was the CARDOM  (Computerized Autonomous Recoil Rapid Deployment Outrange Mortar) system also known as “Keshet”, installed on upgraded M113 APC and the “Hanit”  (Spear MK II) system, which was installed on a 4X4 SUV.

The innovative “Iron Sting” ammunition is the result of 10 years of research and development and, according to the head of the Research and Innovation Department of the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier General Yaniv Rotem, it is expected to revolutionize the modern battlefield. Until now, he added, “the possibility of precision strikes was limited to air strikes and missile systems.”

Following the successful completion of a series of tests in southern Israel, the production of “Iron Sting” will be initiated in order to supply the Israeli Defence Forces.
