The process of voting on the supplementary budget for the recruitment of Professional Soldiers (SYOP) has just been completed. This process was followed so as to meet the needs of the National Guard that would result from the temporary military service deferral of hoplites of 2020 Class for the purpose of studying in the United Kingdom.

The House of Representatives voted against the supplementary budget. Thus, Professional Soldiers (SYOP) will not be recruited, nor will temporary military service deferrals to the hoplites of the 2020 Class be granted. Sixteen MPs voted in favor of the supplementary budget, whereas 32 rejected it.

We remind you that as a basic condition for the granting of deferrals for study purposes in the UK, the Ministry of Defence set the recruitment of a number of Professional Soldiers to cover the needs of the National Guard.

The debate in the Parliament revolved around the sloppiness with which the government handled the whole issue, as well as the degree to which the National Guard will be weakened since, as was said, conscripts perform almost 20 night duties per month, whereas Professional Soldiers perform approximately 10.

The fact that citizens would bear the cost of the government’s decision to grant deferrals was also stressed since this provided for the recruitment of SYOP.
