On Friday, August 20, 2021, the General Support Ship “AIAS” sailed at the Salamis Naval Base. It is donated by the President of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation and Rear Admiral (ret.) of the Hellenic Navy, Mr. Panagiotis Laskaridis. The acceptance of this donation is underway.
The 3rd donation of this type of ship comes exactly one year after the delivery of the 2nd General Support Ship “IRAKLIS” to the Navy and only twenty months from that of the 1st General Support Ship “ATLAS” at a time critical in terms of upgrading the Hellenic Fleet.
The vessel has a length of about 85 meters and a displacement of 4.426 tonnes. It has a maximum speed of 16 knots and a large capacity on its 1000-sq.m. open deck, while it is expected to receive arms and equipment from the Hellenic Navy.
Also, this state-of-the-art ship has integrated the DP2 category Dynamic Positioning system (which provides it with stabilization in immobility under any weather conditions capabilities) with fully electric propulsion. Finally, it has two command bridges.
These ships are considered operational multi-tools, the utilization of which shall enhance the Navy’s capabilities of logistics and availability of ships.
