According to the Israeli army and a spokesman for the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council – adjacent to the enclave – a rocket was launched by Palestinians from the Gaza Strip against the southern part of Israel and landed in an uninhabited area without causing any casualties or material damage.
Residents of Sderot, a town north of the Gaza Strip, rushed to shelters when air defence sirens sounded, according to the military.
The attack took place at the end of Israel’s Independence Day.
The Gaza Strip, home to more than two million Palestinians, has been controlled by the Islamist movement Hamas since 2007. There has been an Israeli blockade since then, backed by Egypt.

Since then, rocket-propelled grenades and arson balloons from the Gaza Strip as well as Israeli retaliatory strikes against Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second-strongest Islamist group in the enclave, have been recorded.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the development of Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system, which has intercepted hundreds of rockets launched from the Gaza Strip and Syria.
The Israeli army announced early this morning that it had launched strikes in the Gaza Strip after a rocket was fired from the Palestinian enclave against southern Israel.
“Fighter jets and attack helicopters have struck an ammunition factory, an underground smuggling tunnel and a military post,” said Hamas, the militant Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip, in a brief statement, clarifying the rocket launch last Thursday night was an act of retaliation.
The rocket fired from the Gaza Strip, a pocket where the armed wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second strongest Islamist group in the region, is also active, landed in an uninhabited area without causing any casualties or property damage, stated the spokesman for the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council, adjacent to the enclave.
The attack came at the end of Israel’s Independence Day.

It was the prelude to the three wars in which Israel and Hamas have since been involved (2008, 2012, 2014).
Since then, rocket-propelled grenades and arson balloons from the Gaza Strip as well as Israeli retaliation against Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second-strongest Islamist group in the enclave, have resumed.
The previous rocket launch from the Gaza Strip took place on March 23, amid elections in Israel. The rocket had landed on an empty plot of land in the southern part of the country without causing any casualties, a few kilometers from a city visited by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
