French Prime Minister, Emmanuel Macron, has put the country on terror alert after a teacher was killed and two others injured in an attack.
The “attack emergency” level has been used in previous counter-terrorism cases. Macron went to the scene of the tragedy, while the French Parliament suspended its work in solidarity with the victims.
The attack at Gambetta High School in the northern city, at about 11:00 local time, came amid rising tensions in France’s large Muslim and Jewish communities over the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, said there was no doubt about the link between the Arras attack and the Israel-Hamas conflict.
According to local officials, cited by the BBC, the attacker, Mohamed Mogouchkov, aged around 20, has been arrested. Born in Russia, the attacker is of Chechen origin, according to police sources cited by Reuters, and is known to security services for his involvement with Islamist extremism.
Local media reported that the attacker was a former student of the school and that his brother had also been arrested. According to the police, the situation is now under control.
