During his visit to Cyprus, the senator of the Democrats and chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Robert Menendez, was awarded the Great Cross of the Order of Makarios III by the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis.

During the ceremony, Senator Menendez also met with the Chief of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Democritus Zervakis, who in a relevant post said that the senator’s contribution stands out for security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

During the ceremony, security issues both in terms of the Cyprus problem and the wider Eastern Mediterranean were at the main focus of the reports.

President Anastasiadis praised the US Senator’s political actions in favour of the withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus, the restoration of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all citizens and a viable solution to the Cyprus problem in accordance with international law. He also stressed Mr. Menendez’s contribution to the strategic and allied relationship between Greece, Cyprus and the United States and his crucial role in promoting the East Med Act in the US Congress.

Senator Menendez, for his part, after emphasising the impact of Turkish policy on Cyprus and the wider region, said: “My goal is to see the last Turkish soldier leave the island.”
