Defence Redefined

Poland’s government will distribute a “survival guide” to all households in the country this year, aimed at preparing citizens for potential crises, the Interior Ministry announced today.

This initiative is part of a broader set of measures designed to enhance Poland’s defence capabilities, particularly given its strategic position bordering Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. Among these measures is a large-scale military training programme for civilians.

“The guide will provide information on how to respond to various emergency situations, ensuring that every citizen knows what to do and how to be better prepared,” said Robert Klonovsky, a ministry official, in a statement to PAP news agency.

The brochure will outline steps for protecting one’s family and preparing for disruptions, such as multi-hour or multi-day power outages, he explained.

Similar informational leaflets have been distributed in Sweden, while in Finland, citizens can access guidance on crisis preparedness via a dedicated government website.

In Poland, the leaflet will also be available in Ukrainian, acknowledging the presence of approximately 900,000 Ukrainian refugees in the country. According to Klonovsky, a special version of the guide tailored for young children is also in development.

A staunch ally of Ukraine, Poland will launch a military training programme this year to ensure that every adult male receives basic training in case of war, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Friday.

According to Polish media, the army will provide a range of training courses, lasting from one day to one month, at military camps across the country.
