The population of Greece amounts to 10,432,481 people, according to the results of the census carried out by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) and released today.

As announced by the President of ELSTAT, Athanasios Thanopoulos, of the 10,432,481 people, 5,075,249 are men and 5,357,232 are women.

It is noted that the population of Greece records a decrease of 3.5% compared to the 2011 census, when 10,816,286 people were recorded in Greece. That is, within a decade, the country’s population decreased by 383,805 people.

A decrease in population was observed in 12 of the 13 regions of the country. The most populous region of the country is that of Attica with 3,792,469 inhabitants. Its population decreased by 35,965 inhabitants compared to 2011.

Central Macedonia follows with 1,792,069 inhabitants. Its population is estimated to have decreased by 90,039 people in the last 10 years.

In total, out of the 13 Regions of the country, 12 had a drop in population, while only one recorded an increase. This is the South Aegean Region, where the population increased from 309,000 inhabitants to 324,000.

It is noted that the above data are provisional. Detailed data on the legal population of the country will be released by the end of the year.
