The UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, UNFICYP, has issued a statement underlining its commitment to maintaining security and tranquility within the buffer zone, said Stéphane Dujarric, the representative of the UN Secretary-General, during the briefing press at the headquarters of the international organization in New York.

In partnership with the UN Refugee Agency, the Mission provides essential humanitarian assistance such as food, water, shelter and medical assistance to vulnerable migrants, including women and children.

While acknowledging concerns about irregular crossings, the Mission stressed the importance of allowing asylum seekers unimpeded access to asylum procedures as defined by national, European, and international refugee law.

The Organization is in discussions with the Republic of Cyprus to address the growing humanitarian challenges in the buffer zone, he added.
