The explosions at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Mersin led the residents of the area to panic. In fact, the explosions were so powerful that they caused damage to the surrounding houses.

Opposition MP Alpay Admen said 86 houses had been damaged, while the prefect said a committee had been incorporated to determine the extent of the damage and that citizens would be compensated.

However, there have been major reactions regarding the construction of the nuclear power plant in the area all along.

A team from the Security Inspection Department of the Directorate-General for Security will conduct the necessary investigations into the explosions. The incident, according to Turkish media, will be thoroughly investigated and the necessary measures will be taken against the culprits.

CHP Mersin Deputy Chairman, Ali Mahir Başarır, claimed that while the Akkuyu nuclear power plant was still under construction, cracks had formed in the concrete floor on which the nuclear reactor is located.

Başarır shared a video of the construction of the Mersin Akkuyu nuclear power plant on his social media account:

In the video he posted, Başarır said: “Cracks are formed in the ground as construction continues. For Akkuyu is a seismic zone. Water leaks from the ground. In the event of an earthquake, after the completion of the construction, the Mediterranean and Mersin will be destroyed. We are close, so stop the nuclear power plant.”
