The United States on Thursday welcomed Turkey’s “clear commitment” to play a “key role” in the security of Kabul airport, following the withdrawal of US troops and foreigners.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Joe Biden during a meeting earlier this week in Brussels that Ankara “needs some support to do so” and his US counterpart “assured that this support will be provided,” White House Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters.
“President Erdogan welcomed this issue and the two leaders decided to work together to make it a reality,” he said, adding that they had asked their groups to “finalize the details” of this “targeted mission”. “But the clear commitment of the leaders was reflected in the fact that Turkey would play a key role in the security of Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport,” Sullivan said.
