German arms exports and defence ties have effectively been on hold since 2016. However, this is now changing due to the complex geopolitical dynamics unfolding in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
According to new data from the German Ministry of Economy, in 2024 the exports of armament systems from Germany to Turkey will set a record since 2006 and amount to 230 million euros, as it in appears from a parliamentary question by the MP of the Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance, Sevim Dagdelen.
As the German news agency dpa reports, the figures reflect a clear shift by Germany towards Ankara in the defence sector. In fact, according to what Olaf Solz said during his recent visit to Constantinople, aid and arms shipments are self-evident, because Turkey is a NATO partner.
It should be noted that on Tuesday Solz and Erdogan also had a telephone conversation about the developments in Syria, with analysts in Berlin focusing on the upgraded importance of the German-Turkish alliance at the given moment.
The issue of the Eurofighters that Turkey has been insisting on remains open, with Germany now appearing to be considering the green light as a co-producer.
For a long time, Berlin was categorically opposed to such a thing; however, the developments of recent years in the wider region seem to be leading the German government to reconsider its position.
