At least 28 unexploded artillery shells were found on Sunday by Turkish military diving teams after a man reported the suspicious metal objects to authorities.
The shells were found in the sea near a Constantinople beach, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency. Eight shells were brought ashore by order of prosecutors to be identified and disposed of.
The controlled explosion took place on Sofular Beach in the Sile district of Constantinople. Access to the beach was temporarily blocked.
Television footage shows the explosion occurring in the sea just meters from the beach and smoke soaring into the sky.
