Turkey appoints a special envoy for efforts to normalize relations with Armenia. The two countries do not maintain good diplomatic relations due to the Armenian Genocide and Turkey’s support for Azerbaijan.

According to Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoglu, Ankara today appointed former ambassador to Washington Serdar Kilic as a special envoy to work for the normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia. Kilic previously served as Turkey’s special envoy to Japan and Lebanon.

Turkish and Armenian airlines have also applied for charter flights between Istanbul and Ankara, the ministry said. The Ministry of Transport will evaluate these requests and new information will be available in the coming days regarding the companies that will be able to operate, according to Cavusoglou. The steps towards a normalization will continue, he said.
