Milrem Robotics’s ‘THEMIS’ unmanned multi-purpose vehicle was showcased at the DIMDEX defence equipment exhibition held between March 21-23 in Qatar.
The THeMIS is a combat unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) which is already in use in 11 countries including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Estonia, Germany and the United States and has been tested within the framework of exercises and in operations in Mali. It provides infantry support, while through its functions the manufacturers consider that it can reduce the number of soldiers required on the field.
THeMIS technical characteristics:
- Maximum speed: 20 km/h
- Length: 2.4 m
- Width: 2 m
- Height: 1.15 m
- Rated payload weight: 750 kg
- Maximum payload weight: 1200 kg
- Maximum side slope: 30%
- Run time hybrid: up to 15 hours
- Run time electric: up to 1.5 hours
- Line of sight control range: 1.5 km
- Cameras: IR (MIL-STD-810G), Thermal, HDR
- Sensors: LiDARs
THeMIS is powered by a hybrid diesel engine and electric generator. Its various versions include the THeMIS Cargo, which is used to transport necessary mission equipment so as to reduce the weight carried by soldiers, the THeMIS Cargo Mortar carrier, which carries an 81 mm mortar, and the THeMIS Cargo CASEVAC used for the evacuation of the wounded on the battlefield.
In its combat versions, the system includes the THeMIS Combat Support which can be used by both military and police forces and includes a stretcher, equipment storage cases and the possibility of adding extra light weapons. The THeMIS Combat with ADDER DM version has a remote-controlled machine gun station, while the THeMIS Combat version with PROTECTOR RS4 has a Kongsberg remote-controlled armament station which, in addition to its electro-optical set, can be equipped with a 0.50” heavy machine gun, 40 mm grenade launchers and anti-tank weapons including Javelin. In addition, the RWS in question can be equipped with an active protection system (APS) and a laser sensor for incoming threats such as anti-tank missiles.
This version is also the version located at the company’s pavilion at DIMDEX, while more than 20,000 units of this RWS have been delivered worldwide.
THEMIS Combat with deFNder® Medium is equipped with a remote control station developed by FN Herstal, the THeMIS Combat version with R400S-MK2-D-HD features a 30 mm autocannon remote weapon system, while the THEMIS Combat version with GUARDIAN 2.0 offers defence capabilities of M2 12,7 mm armaments, MK19 grenade launchers and 7.62 mm machine guns.
The THeMIS Combat with Hero-120 – due to its small size – can reinforce special forces groups with surveillance and anti-tank missile transport capabilities, while the THeMIS Combat with TERRAHAWK unmanned C-UAS system can be used to protect critical infrastructure and against Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
THeMIS is available in the surveillance versions KX-4 LE Titan and Themis Observe with Shark which come with a drone. Finally, there is the THeMIS with GroundEye version for detecting mines and explosive devices.
Both Greece and Cyprus were among the participants in the DIMDEX exhibition. Turkey also participated as an exhibitor with systems of the domestic defence industry. The example of Aselsan and the Anadolu shipyards is typical.
