“CYBER COALITION 2023”, one of the most important NATO cyber defence exercises, was held from Monday, November 27 to Friday, December 01, 2023, at the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS).
According to a relevant announcement, “CYBER COALITION 2023” is planned and managed by NATO’s Allied Command Transformation (ACT). From the Greek side, it is coordinated and monitored by the Directorate of Cyber Defence of HNDGS and was attended by personnel of the Joint Cyber Defence Operations Center of HNDGS, the respective cyber security departments of the General Staffs as well as IT personnel of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps-Greece (NRDC-GR).
“CYBER COALITION 2023” has been held every year since 2008. This year the exercise took place with the participation of approximately 1000 trainees from NATO member states and partners, from the European Union, as well as industry bodies and academia.
The exercise was conducted via telematics in a virtual exercise field at NATO’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Center of Excellence (CCDCoE) in Tallinn, Estonia, and aimed to train personnel in cyber defence procedures at technical, operational, and decision-making levels. Further, it sought to strengthen the capabilities of NATO and its allies and to deepen their cooperation in the field of cyberspace.
During the exercise, scenarios relating to countering cyberattacks on critical infrastructures supporting NATO operations (network, information, energy production, supply chain) were executed, alongside scenarios concerning hacking electric vehicle support systems and legal issues pertaining to cyber-attacks being considered as armed attacks.
