Civil Defence | Increased flow of migrants from the sea and the buffer zone
The Civil Defence, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, continues, among many other tasks, its mission to better manage the migration flows in Cyprus.
In the announcement, the Cyprus Civil Defence General Directorate (GEDPA) states that on 06.05.2020 members of the Regional Directorate of Civil Defence Famagusta and Limassol set up additional tents in First Reception Center in Kokkinotrimithia (former Pournara camp), to extend the camp and dilution of the population living there.
GEDPA notes that for the entire period until the event of the pandemic there was a particularly increased flow of migrants from the sea and the buffer zone.
GEDPA added that a significant number of people in need of international protection are being hosted at the First Reception Center in Kokkinotrimithia, where all the necessary precautionary measures are being taken to combat the pandemic. There are no cases among the population living in the Center.
Finally, the announcement states that the Civil Defence has been responsible for the organization and operation of the Center since September 2014, when about three hundred Syrian refugees sailing wayward off the coast of Paphos were spotted.
