Christos Stylianidis is the new Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of Greece, as officially announced by the Greek government spokesman, Giannis Oikonomou.
Mr. Stylianidis takes over the leadership of the newly established Ministry, while the former Chief of the General Staff of the Hellenic Air Force, Evangelos Tournas, is appointed Deputy Minister.
Christos Stylianidis is expected to be sworn in at the end of the week, while the honorary assignation of Greek citizenship will precede.
“I accepted the proposal with full awareness of the challenges and expectations,” notes Christos Stylianidis in his first statement after taking over the Ministry of Climate Change and Civil Protection of Greece.
“I thank Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the honorable proposal to take over as Minister in the newly established Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. I accepted it with full awareness of the challenges and expectations. The consequences of climate change have overtaken us and we must accelerate major change without delay. Prevention and preparedness for natural disasters is the most effective weapon we have,” notes Mr. Stylianidis.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Nikos Anastasiadis had a telephone conversation yesterday on the initiative of the Greek Prime Minister, regarding the appointment of the former European Commissioner Christos Stylianidis to the ministerial portfolio of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.
Mr. Mitsotakis informed the President of the Republic about his thoughts. For his part, N. Anastasiadis told the Greek Prime Minister that the issue is the sole responsibility of himself and the Greek government, and wished every success to Mr. Stylianidis if, in the end, he would be (his appointment was announced a while ago) the final choice of the Prime Minister for the aforementioned ministerial post.
Kαλή επιτυχία στον Χρήστο Στυλιανίδη @StylianidesEu, στα νέα του καθήκοντα ως υπουργός Πολιτικής Προστασίας της Ελληνικής Κυβέρνησης.

After the formalization of his appointment, the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis wished good luck to the former European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid, and Crisis Management Christos Stylianidis, for his appointment as Minister of Civil Protection of the Greek Government.
