Twelve Turkish soldiers died after being exposed to methane fumes during an operation last Sunday (6 July 2025) in a cave in northern Iraq, the Turkish Ministry of Defence has announced.

Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, attended a military parade in Nagorno-Karabakh’s largest city yesterday, warning Armenia not to show a spirit of “revenge”, weeks after Baku recaptured the territory from Armenian separatists.
Azeri troops and a military band marched in the central square of Khankendi, a city Armenians call Stepanakert, according to photos released by the Azerbaijani presidency. The Azerbaijani flag can also be seen fluttering over the building that housed the headquarters of the separatists’ political administration.

Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva, the President’s wife, and their son Haidar also attended the ceremony, as is clarified in the announcement of the presidency. Aliyev first visited this regional capital on October 15 and raised his national flag there.
Yesterday was the third anniversary of Baku’s victory over Yerevan in 2020, after a six-week war. Armenia was then forced to cede significant territory to Azerbaijan in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, which it had controlled for 30 years.
Negotiations under the auspices of international mediation to reach a comprehensive peace agreement between the Caucasian neighbors, who vehemently hate each other, have so far been fruitless.
