The Kremlin has warned that the threat of some sort of Ukrainian sabotage at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine is high and steps are being taken to counter it.
Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that the effects of such sabotage could be catastrophic. The day before yesterday, Ukraine and Russia accused each other of planning an attack on Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
As Bloomberg notes, the nuclear plant, Europe’s largest, has been the target of artillery, drone, and missile attacks over the past year, with Ukrainian and Russian officials blaming each other for the strikes.
UN observers were stationed in Zaporizhia in September to assess the risks.
The US Air Force’s decision to send the Boeing WC-135R Constant Phoenix aircraft to Greece on June 30 fueled speculation that it could be linked to threats to Zaporizhia.
According to the US Air Force, the aircraft, which can record radioactivity emissions in real time, played a critical role in the 1986 Chornobyl nuclear accident.
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The US Air Force said the aircraft regularly deploys in the Mediterranean Sea.
