The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visited Tunisia together with the Prime Ministers of the Netherlands and Italy, in order to negotiate a package of initiatives that will help the Mediterranean country to overcome the economic problems that plague it and at the same time to deal with the increased flows of immigrants to Europe.

The President of the Commission announced that she is ready to offer a support package of 900 million euros to Tunisia through a five-point program that also includes tackling irregular immigration.

Besides, Georgia Melonia and Mark Rutte stressed in the meeting with the Tunisian President, Kais Sayed, that his country should play a key role in dealing with trafficking rings.

At the same time, European leaders will help Tunisia receive a $1.9 billion package from the International Monetary Fund in order to overcome the economic crisis and avoid bankruptcy.
