Nicosia expresses its strong discomfort with the use of the “flag” of the pseudo-state during the extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Turkic States in Ankara, in the presence of officials of Hungary, an EU member-state.

Explanations have already been requested from the Hungarian side and the matter will be raised by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Konstantinos Kompos, to his Hungarian counterpart.

The press representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Theodoros Gotsis, stated that the Ministry had made precautionary statements to the member- and observer-states in relation to the participation of the pseudo-state.

He underlined that the fact of using symbols in the presence of Hungarian officials is unacceptable and therefore, in addition to the other denunciations, the strong discomfort of the Republic of Cyprus has been expressed to Budapest.

More specifically, he said, explanations were requested from the Hungarian side and the issue is being further handled through the diplomatic channel.

Mr. Gotsis also said that the issue will be raised by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Konstantinos Kompos, in a meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, on the sidelines of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the European Union in Brussels on Monday.

In addition to Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan participate as member-states, and Turkmenistan and Hungary as observer-states.
