Members of the United Nations Security Council, including Russia, agreed on a statement expressing strong support for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Ukraine issue.

The statement does not use terms such as “war”, “conflict” or “invasion”, as many council members have called Russia’s ongoing military action, or the term “special military operation” used by Moscow.

The statement, drawn up by Norway and Mexico, expresses deep concern for the maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine and recalls that all Member-States have undertaken, under the Charter of the United Nations, to resolve their international disputes peacefully.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has reached an agreement with Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, to evacuate civilians, first and foremost from the besieged port of Mariupol, as well as the latest Ukrainian forces at the Azovstal steel plant and hundreds of civilians still living in underground shelters.

The UN and the Red Cross International Committee have carried out two successful evacuations from Mariupol and the surrounding areas so far and are currently trying to arrange that of the steel plant too.
