On Friday, December 10, Houthi forces attempted to shoot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet. The aircraft was nearly shot down and although it was damaged, it did not crash. The incident took place in the airspace of the city of Mariv in Yemen.

The Fatir-1 anti-aircraft system

The system used by the Houthi forces to hit the Saudi aircraft is the Fatir-1 anti-aircraft system. This is a modified version of the Soviet SA-6 “Gainful” which has been in service since 1967. The Fatir-1 was first introduced publicly by the Houthis in 2017.

The Fatir-1 can engage a target at a distance of 25 km and an altitude of 8 km. During his presentation, the Houthi spokesman said the system was used to shoot down two US MQ-9 Reaper type UCAVs. In addition, they claim that it has been used to date against fighter jets of various types such as F-16, F-15, Mirage and Typhoon.
