The Cabinet has decided the revocation of a total of fourteen passports of the Republic of Cyprus from 10 “officials” of the Pseudo-State “Cabinet” and 4 members of the “Varosia opening committee”.

This is a response to Turkish provocations regarding the change of the status of the enclosed city of Famagusta, while at the same time the Cabinet is proceeding with the filing of the 5th Transnational Appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Turkish plans for Varosia.

In his statements, Government Spokesperson, Mr. Pelekanos, stated that the Cabinet at first decided to revoke or not to renew or issue passports of the Republic of Cyprus to a number of persons, who either participate in the so-called cabinet of the pseudo-state or are members of the Varosia opening committee and who by their actions undermine the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Cyprus, contrary to the provisions of the Constitution.

In fact, he added that these are the same people who, with their specific actions undermined the Republic of Cyprus, promote the implementation of Turkey’s plans to change the status of the Varosia enclave, contrary to the  United Nations Security Council resolutions, in particular Resolutions 550 and 789, on the status of the Famagusta enclave.

The Director-General of the Ministry of Interior will inform the said persons in writing, via letters that will be sent to the addresses given by these 14 people when they applied to obtain passports. At the same time, there will be notification to the authorities of other countries for the said revocation as well. It should be noted that these 14 people also have Turkish passports.

Finally, the Cabinet decided to ask the Attorney General not only to proceed with the filing of the 5th transnational appeal in relation to what happened but also with regard to the actions that Turkey and the occupation regime continue to take in the enclosed area of Famagusta, following the recommendation received from respected legal advisers who the Republic of Cyprus addressed.

The Legal Service will initially contact the experts, who the Republic of Cyprus addressed so as to provide their opinions, in order to make the appropriate preparation. The time when the appeal will be filed remains to be seen.
