Fires, throwing Molotov cocktails, a Cyprus Police patrol vehicle arson and various other incidents were part of the picture on Holy Saturday across the free areas of Cyprus.
In fact, the Fire Service announced that within only 24 hours and specifically from 06:00 on May 1, 2021 until 06:00 on May 2, 2021, the Service extinguished 261 fires.
Despite the decrees regarding the ban on lighting fires, last night both the fires and the “Burning of Judas” rituals were out of control.
The spokesman for the Fire Service, Andreas Kettis, said in a statement on television that “these actions are unjustifiable. That is, for some, especially minors, to walk and light up whatever they come across on the occasion of Easter. This is unjustified and where we all want to put them in their place.”
In Agios Nikolaos in Limassol, the incidents escalated with the burning of a police patrol vehicle in Griva Digeni Avenue, while in Larnaca and Paphos, various attempts were made for “Burning of Judas” rituals, according to the Police.
It is noted that a barrage of fires also took place 24 hours ago as you can see in detail in a video with Mr. Kettis’ statements below:
