The US military announced midday Friday that it had killed ISIS leader Abu Yusuf in an airstrike in Deir ez-Zor province.
In its statement, the US Central Command said that in the same attack, which took place on Thursday, another operative of the Islamic State was killed.
CENTCOM Forces Kill ISIS Leader During Precision Strike in Syria
Centcom commander General Michael Erik Kurilla said the United States—working with allies and partners in the region—will not allow ISIS to take advantage of the current situation in Syria and regroup.
At the same time, he announced that approximately 8,000 ISIS operatives are imprisoned throughout Syria and that the organisation aims to take advantage of the current situation in the country in order to break into detention facilities and free them.
As it also became known, the attack took place in an area previously controlled by the Assad regime and Russia.
