Despite the increased presence of military forces, armed protesters have reached many areas of the capital since Sunday morning. Last week, in a special report, the FBI warned that “armed protests” were planned in 50 state capitals and the US Capitol in Washington, DC, before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 20.

While the protesters are recognized on various platforms as members of the so-called “boogaloo” movement, they seem to be largely anti-government, anarchists, opposed to conservative movements. The situation is troubled and riots may break out at any time.

Following the attack on the Capitol on January 6 by Trump supporters, Washington has been turned into a fortified camp with concrete blocks and barbed wire as authorities fear new unrest on the sidelines of the swearing-in ceremony. Under normal circumstances, the inauguration of the new US president is an opportunity for hundreds of thousands of Americans from all over the United States to flock to Washington to attend the ceremony. But this year the celebration will be different: the National Mall, Washington National Park, close to the Capitol, will be closed. Only people with special accreditation will be allowed to enter this zone where thousands of soldiers have been deployed.
