In the context of the regular weekly press briefing on the activities of the Turkish Ministry of National Defence, Vice Admiral Zeki Akturk, the representative of the Ministry of Defence of Turkey, answering a question about the signing of a new agreement between Turkey and Somalia, confirmed the agreement’s military aspect, in respect of the organization of the national Army in the country with the assistance of Turkey and the protection of its territorial waters.

The framework agreement on Defence and Economic Cooperation signed during the Somali Defence Minister’s visit to Ankara last week aims to develop and diversify the activities undertaken to date in the framework of their bilateral military relations.

At the request of Somalia, Turkey will provide support in the fight against terrorism and in the field of maritime security. Thus, it will help Somalia improve its capacity and capabilities in combating illegal and irregular activities in its territorial waters. The ratification of this agreement is underway. It is estimated that this agreement will give a significant boost to Turkey-Somalia relations.
