In a statement, the Taliban government announced that it has decided to take over the operation of Afghanistan’s embassy in Iran, with the aim of strengthening relations between the two Muslim countries.

There has been no confirmation at this stage from Iranian authorities of the accreditation of Taliban diplomats.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, said recently that Tehran has not changed its approach regarding diplomatic relations with its eastern neighbor.

According to UN estimates, at least 3.5 million Afghans live in Iran, most of them undocumented.

No country has yet recognized the de facto government of the Taliban in Afghanistan, who seized power amid the chaotic withdrawal of US-led foreign troops in August 2021.

The Taliban have sent representatives to Pakistan, China, Russia, and Turkmenistan.

Envoys of the deposed government remain stationed in many other countries around the world, but have kept their diplomatic work to a minimum as the fate of the missions remains pending.
