Sweden’s ruling Social Democrats announced yesterday that they intend to decide on possible NATO membership by May 24th.

“We are currently holding consultations on security policy within our party (…). This dialogue is expected to be completed by May 12 and then we will begin our decision-making process,” said the party Secretary, Tobias Boudin, in a written statement.

The final decision will be made before the next meeting of the party leadership, scheduled for May 24, he added.

The center-left Social Democrats, led by Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson, have so far been historically opposed to joining NATO and reaffirmed their position at the party’s last congress in November, but the war in Ukraine has sparked the issue in Sweden and within the party.
