The tradition of Agios Georgios as the patron saint of the Army dates back to the Byzantine years. In modern Greek history, Agios Georgios has been officially established as the patron saint of the Hellenic Army since the last century with a royal decree. The latter, however, does not entail the Artillery, whose patron saint is St. Barbara.

The Chief of the National Defence General Staff, General Konstantinos Floros, wished Happy Birthday to the celebrants and to the Army personnel who, as he wrote, are guarding our Homeland.

In his turn, the Minister of National Defence, Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, mentioned that today we honor Saint Georgios, the patron saint of the Hellenic Army, and wished Happy birthday to the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and Hoplites of our Army.
