Twelve Turkish soldiers died after being exposed to methane fumes during an operation last Sunday (6 July 2025) in a cave in northern Iraq, the Turkish Ministry of Defence has announced.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, will have a meeting with the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate, Senator Robert Menendez, today.
The meeting is scheduled for 16:30 at the Presidential Palace.
At 17:15, Senator Menendez will address the World Congress of Diaspora Cypriots at the Presidential Palace.
At 7:00 p.m., an awarding ceremony of the Golden Medal of the Apostle Barnabas to Senator Menendez by the Archbishop of Cyprus George will take place.
Tomorrow, in a special ceremony that will take place at the Municipal Hall of Paphos, Mr. Menendez will be awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the City of Paphos.
The official ceremony will be preceded by a visit of the US Senator to the facilities of the American University currently under construction in the city of Pafos.
