Norway will order 54 German-made new-generation Leopard 2 tanks, with the option to purchase 18 more in order to replace older tanks of the same type, the country’s government announced today.
Norwegian Prime Minister, Jonas Gar Støre, said in a press conference that this ensures that the country has the same tanks as neighboring countries and many key NATO allies, further strengthening the relationship with Germany as well.
With the Leopard 2A7s it will purchase, Norway will replace its older Leopard 2A4s, some of which will be sent to Ukraine. The country originally intended to buy 72 tanks, but decided to scale back its order after the country’s Army Chief recommended more resources be given to the purchase of helicopters, drones and long-range artillery.
