The President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiadis welcomed yesterday afternoon, at the Presidential Palace, the King of Jordan Abdalla II, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus.
According to the announcement by the Presidency, upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace, an honorary detachment paid tribute and the National Anthems of Cyprus – Jordan were played. Afterwards, the King of Jordan laid a wreath at the statue of Ethnarch Makarios III in the courtyard of the Presidential Palace, followed by a private meeting between the President of the Republic and the King of Jordan, during which gifts were exchanged.
President Anastasiadis gave to the King of Jordan the Grand Necklace of the Order of the Blessed Sacrament, and King Abdallah II gave to the President the Order of the Renaissance, the highest honor of his country.
On the sidelines of the meeting, an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation, on the extradition of fugitives, and a Memorandum of Development Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Jordan were signed at the Presidential Palace. From the Cypriot side, the Agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation was signed by the Minister of Finance Konstantinos Petridis, the Agreement on the extradition of fugitives by the Minister of Justice and Public Order Stefi Drakou, and the Memorandum of Development Cooperation by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Christodoulidis.
Afterwards, President Anastasiadis and King Abdallah attended extended talks between the two countries’ delegations during dinner, when President Anastasiadis briefed the King of Jordan on developments in the Cyprus issue and the ongoing Turkish challenges, while they also discussed bilateral relations, actions to address the effects of climate change and the President’s initiative for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Furthermore, efforts to address the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, regional developments, immigration, EU-Jordan relations, and cooperation between the two countries in various fields such as Trade and Tourism were also addressed.
