The Australian Army, in the context of the new doctrine “Army in Motion” and the constant need to adapt to emerging threats, proceeded to the development of robotic and autonomous systems on the battlefield that will bolster the capabilities of the armed forces while protecting Australian personnel.
Integrating quadruped robotic systems (robotic dogs) made by Ghost Robotics will also support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.

The development of these systems was carried out by the Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation Office (RICO), which was officially established by the Australian Army in March 2020.
The role of RICO is to explore, coordinate and develop ideas using disruptive technologies.
RICO will use, among other things, specialized Army personnel to advance its knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum technology, robotics and autonomy.
