Charalambos Petridis | Participation of Defence Minister in EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brest

Today, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Charalambos Petridis, is going to Brest, France, to take part in the work of the Foreign Affairs Council, within the framework of the French Presidency of the European Union. Member States’ Defence Ministers will address current issues of the Common Defence and Security Policy. 

Member States’ Defence Ministers shall attend a working dinner with NATO Secretary-General, the Deputy UN Peacekeeping Operations Secretary-General and the Chairman of the Committee for Security and Defence of the European Parliament, during which the challenges facing the EU will be discussed because of interventions by governmental and non-governmental bodies in areas where the Union is involved operationally. 

The next day, European policy will be discussed on the period and ways to ensure the strengthening of the security and autonomy of the Union in relation to its military capabilities.

The meeting will conclude with a joint discussion with the Foreign Ministers on the drafting of the Compass Strategy, which will guide joint efforts for EU security and defence in the coming years.
