The armed commando unit that assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moise on Wednesday consisted of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans, the police chief of the country said on Thursday. “It was a group of 28 assailants, of whom 26 were Colombians, who assassinated the president,” said Leon Charles, the general director of the Haitian police.
He said two Americans and 15 Colombians had been arrested, three Colombians had been killed and eight others are still wanted.
At least six of the alleged Colombian mercenaries are ex-military.
At least six of the alleged mercenaries accused by the Haitian authorities of involvement in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise are former members of the Colombian armed forces, Colombian Defence Minister Diego Molano stated on Thursday.
“According to initial information, these are Colombian citizens, former military personnel. We instructed (…) the police and the army to cooperate immediately in conducting this investigation to verify the facts,” said Mr. Molano during a video which circulated on the media by his services.
