A fighter aircraft of the Hellenic Air Force was found in the Frakto forest in Drama, 77 years after it crashed.
The wreckage of the aircraft remained in an isolated ravine with dense vegetation, a remnant of the civil war. The discovery was made by a group of three friends who had spent years studying the area and hearing about the fighter aircraft.
The final tracking effort began in mid-June, with the team locating the aircraft after 12 hours of searching and constant radio contact. The area is difficult to access and the aircraft’s fuselage, although in relatively good condition, was badly damaged.
The discovery of the aircraft confirmed the initial assumption that it was a warplane of the Hellenic Air Force and not a British one, as the gold transport myths were initially circulating.
The three friends, Christos Stavrianidis, Lazaros Fegaridis and Panagiotis Kiapidis, had devoted a lot of time and effort to find the aircraft, relying on information from local residents and loggers.
The fate of the pilots remains unknown, as no bodies or remains have been found. The area was always densely forested and there was no possibility of landing, which made rescuing the passengers from the crash extremely difficult.
The discovery of the aircraft raises questions about the cause of the crash, whether it was bad weather or technical failure or was shot down, and the recovery and collection of the pieces of the aircraft by the military authorities will shed light on the events of the time.
