The legislative initiative of the Ministry of National Defence “Establishment of the Hellenic Center for Defence Innovation, modernization of the institutional framework of Higher Military Academies, establishment of a Joint Informatics Corps in the Hellenic Armed Forces and other provisions” was set for public electronic consultation yesterday.

The said bill entails four main axes.

Firstly, the Hellenic Center for Defence Innovation is established to develop a defence innovation ecosystem for the benefit of both the Armed Forces and the scientific potential of the country, while the second axis includes provisions for the modernization of the operation of Higher Military Academies.

In addition, the third axis provides for the introduction of the Informatics Corps to the Armed Forces, tasked with shielding the same against modern cybersecurity challenges and threats.

The fourth axis includes individual arrangements of issues mainly related to the smooth operation of military hospitals and the health care provided, new special programs for the service of men and women in the Armed Forces, conscription arrangements, etc.

Given the importance of this initiative, the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikolaos Dendias, invites the interested parties to participate in the public electronic consultation, formulating their views and observations for the improvement of the provisions of the proposed bill.

The public consultation process started on April 30, 2024 and will end on May 13, 2024.

However, given the importance of the legislation, there is concern among companies and defence industry associations about the timing of the bill in question given in consultation, as the Easter holidays may hinder the provision of remarks and comments at this time.
