The German PzH 2000 howitzer has achieved a remarkable level of technical durability in Ukraine by firing a total of 20,000 rounds of 155 mm shells from a single barrel, while its average is up to 4,500 shells.
This is a new record both for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the manufacturer of the barrel of the Panzerhaubitze PzH 2000 system, Rheinmetall.
The German defence company received credits from the Ukrainian soldiers who operate these platforms, said CEO Armin Papperger. Further, he stated that Ukrainian artillerymen highly appreciate the German military equipment, which they use daily in their fight against the Russians on the frontlines.

Papperger specifically highlighted the exceptional performance of the PzH 2000, noting that the barrels endure tremendous stress. Yet despite heavy workloads, the Ukrainians have managed to extract the maximum potential in terms of efficiency from this modern 155 mm artillery system.
Under normal conditions, a PzH 2000 barrel can withstand up to 4,500 shots before needing replacement, according to the manufacturer KMW’s recommendation (member of the KNDS group). However, these German-developed howitzers in Ukraine have demonstrated extraordinary capabilities, with a single barrel enduring 20,000 shots.
While this may not be a widespread occurrence, it is still an impressive record for any artillery system.

PzH 2000 is in service with the Ukrainian Army and, particularly, it is operated by the 43rd Artillery Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Armin Papperger mentioned that earlier the repair procedures for this artillery system had entailed multiple challenges. These issues have been known since the previous year, as the howitzers have been extensively utilized on the battlefield. This resulted in 50% of the PzH 2000 being parked in constant need of repairs.
However, most of these issues have been resolved through cooperation with other NATO countries.
