Serbs continue to surrender illegal weapons in their possession two weeks after deadly attacks rocked the country.
As CNN Greece reports, so far more than 15,000 weapons, more than 2,500 explosive devices, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition have been handed over within the one-month deadline given without any consequences.
In two separate incidents, 18 people died and 21 were injured in May. At the Vladislav Ribnikar school of Belgrade, a 13-year-old opened fire with one of his father’s two guns, killing seven girls, a boy, and a security guard. A few days later, a 10-year-old victim of the attack succumbed to her injuries, bringing the total number of victims to 10.
The next day a 21-year-old gunman killed eight people and wounded 14 in a village south of the capital. Serbia has the highest rates of gun ownership in Europe, yet such incidents are rare.
Despite the fact that President Aleksandar Vucic has announced that those who surrender their weapons will have an amnesty within the country, there is great anger at the prevailing culture of violence.
