The pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) and its allies will not field a candidate in Turkey’s May 14 presidential election.
This announcement was made by Pervin Buldan, a member of the presidency of the party acting as the regulator in the Turkish elections, hindering the re-election prospects of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Announcing the party’s decision during a press conference, Pervin Buldan did not clarify whether the HDP alliance would support opposition candidate and Republican People’s Party (CHP) President, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, after their meeting last weekend.
The HDP is the third largest party in the Turkish parliament and gathers the support of 10% of the electorate, playing a “key” role in the presidential election.
