South Korea’s Armed Forces opened warning fire to attract the attention of the crew of a North Korean cargo ship on Monday morning. The said ship had allegedly violated the two countries’ de facto maritime border in the Yellow Sea, an area claimed by Seoul and Pyongyang, South Korean national news agency Yonhap reported.
The North Korean cargo ship reportedly crossed the so-called Northern Boundary Line near Bengyeong Island at 03:42 (local time), and, after warning shots by the South Korean Navy, it moved north, the National Defence General Staff in Seoul stated, according to Yonap.

According to the same source, North Korea claimed that a South Korean warship crossed the disputed maritime border and the North Korean military opened warning fire 10 times with a multiple rocket launcher.
The purpose was to make the “enemy vessel” move away, according to a statement from a representative of the authorities, which was broadcast by the North Korean news agency KCNA.
