The population in the State-controlled areas of Cyprus on October 1, 2021, amounted to 918,100, showing an increase of 9.2% compared to the results of the 2011 Population Census (840,400), according to the preliminary results released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service.
Of these, 48.6% of the population were men and 51.4% were women.
By province, 38% of the population, i.e. 351,600 people, were registered in Nicosia. In the province of Limassol were registered 258,900 people (28%), in the province of Larnaca 154,200 (17%), in the province of Paphos 101,900 (11%), and in the province of Famagusta 51,500, i.e. 6% of the total population.
Of the provinces, the province of Paphos presents the largest population increase compared to 2011, with a rate of 15.4%, followed by Famagusta with a rate of 10.5%. The province of Limassol shows an increase of 10%, the province of Larnaca a 7.7% increase, and the province of Nicosia a 7.5%.
In terms of age, 67.4% of the population is between the ages of 15-64. The percentage of children under the age of 15 is 15.9% and the percentage of people aged 65+ is 16.7%.
It is noted that the percentage of people aged 65+ has exceeded the percentage of children under the age of 15, characteristic of the aging trend of the population. This trend is observed in most European countries, which also show aging characteristics.
Regarding the distribution of the population based on citizenship, the total number of foreign nationals amounts to 193,300 and corresponds to 21.1% of the total population.

The province of Paphos holds the largest percentage of foreign nationals in relation to the total population of the province and amounts to 38%. In the province of Limassol, the percentage of foreign nationals amounts to 20.5%, and in the province of Larnaca to 18.9%. In the provinces of Famagusta and Nicosia, foreign nationals constitute 18.6% and 17.9% of the population of the province, respectively.
In addition, based on the data published, it appears that the average household size is gradually declining, reaching 2.6 people per household in 2021, compared to 4 people recorded in the 1976 Census, 3.2 people in the 1992 Census, and 2.8 people in the last Population Census in 2011. At the provincial level, the largest average household size is recorded in the province of Famagusta, while the smallest size is recorded in the province of Paphos.
The Statistical Service notes that it will be able to provide more detailed information at a later stage. The data to be compiled will be announced and published on the website of the Statistical Service.
