In the face of the needs posed by the new security challenges in the international system, the United States considers it necessary to modernize the GPS system.

In an article, MP and retired US Air Force officer, Donald John Bacon, explains the reasons and areas where the GPS system needs to be upgraded. According to him, the GPS system largely determines the proper functioning of critical areas of defence, economy and politics, but is based on technology that is currently – and to a certain extent – considered obsolete.

New satellites provide three times greater accuracy and eight times improved resistance to jamming efforts, but further improvements are required, especially in terms of crosslinks and on-orbit reprogramming capabilities. This will enable greater accuracy and on-orbit reprogramming can counter jamming and spoofing by providing information on signal and/or data streams as it is enhanced with fast-paced emerging capabilities without the need to produce and launch new satellites.

In addition, he states that a necessary and crucial element of GPS modernization is also the development of a systematic roadmap for the use of the modernized GPS system at the industry level to ensure US supremacy over emerging competitors producing similar systems.
