According to the announcement of the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA) on Wednesday, October 27 the NATO Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD) was completed in Brussels. The conference was attended by the General Director of GDDIA, Vice-Admiral (ret.) Aristidis Alexopoulos. On the sidelines of the meeting, a Letter of Intent was signed between the General Director of GDDIA and his Dutch counterpart, Vice-Admiral Arie Jan de Waard, for the possible acquisition of 2 Type M frigates and 6 minesweepers for the Hellenic Navy.

Subsequently, on October 28, the General Director of GDDIA participated in the Informal Meeting of the Council of the European Defence Agency.

Type M frigates (Karel Doorman) are used in various configurations by the Dutch, Belgian, Chilean and Portuguese Navies. They are equipped with, among others, Thales Vigile APX radar, Oto Melara 76 mm cannon, RIM-7 Sea Sparrow surface-to-air missiles, while they have a displacement of 3320 tons and a length of 122 m. In terms of the minesweepers, even though the announcement made by the GDDIA does not refer to any relevant details, reports speak of “Alkmaar”.
