Armenian Sergeant dies from Azeri fire near border – VIDEO

Azerbaijani forces opened fire against Armenian forces near the village of Verin Shorzha in Gegharkunik province, yesterday, May 25, according to a statement by the Ministry of Defence. 

“On May 25, at about 14:20, near the border village of Verin Shorzha, in the Gegharkunik region of Armenia, the enemy opened fire on Armenian positions. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry of Defence, an Armenian Sergeant, V. Khurshudyan, was seriously injured and later succumbed to his injuries. 

The Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan denies the information about the incident, and in its announcement, claims that the death of the Armenian soldier was an accident.

“The Ministry of Defence of Armenia has once again spread invalid information about the alleged bombing of positions by Azerbaijan in the settlement of Verin Shorzha in the Gegharkunik region on the state border of Armenia and Azerbaijan. We declare that our forces did not open fire against the opposite side,” the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Earlier in May, the Azerbaijani army advanced on Syunik province in Armenia to “adjust the border.” The Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan confirmed that Azerbaijan has occupied Lake Sev.

However, several videos circulating on the internet show Armenian soldiers pushing and hitting Azeri soldiers in the same area, trying to drive them out of Armenian territory. 

The situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan continues to deteriorate since the ceasefire agreement on November 10, 2020, and so far many cross-border incidents have taken place, which could spark the conflict again.
